About DATs

Technical Assistance

Countries have used DATS as a tool to support TB treatment

Digital adherence technologies to support tuberculosis treatment.

By leveraging technological and communication advancements, digital adherence technologies (DATs) can enable enhancements to care, improvements to adherence support, and empowerment of people to self-manage their own treatment.

DATs offer the opportunity for a more person-centered care model; the opportunity for an efficient healthcare system; and they can support healthcare providers when treating people affected by TB.

Our website is intended as a resource for countries and national TB programmes to set up DATs as a supportive tool in TB treatment.

Adherence support with BPaL(M) and other new regimens

In the WHO Consolidated Guidelines on the Treatment of Drug-Resistant TB (DR-TB) and Operational Handbook for DR-TB Treatment (Dec 2022), BPaL(M) and other short regimens have been included as a new recommendation, and preferred option, for treating people suffering from MDR/RR-TB or pre-XDR-TB – shortening treatment duration, offering better outcomes, and therefore significantly improving the quality of life for people on treatment.

Digital adherence technologies (DATs) are an important support tool to include in country planning for the programmatic roll out of these regimens.
The smart pill box, in particular, offers a person-centric way to support adherence and retain people on treatment, with minimal burden for the person on treatment to log adherence, whilst helping healthcare providers identify people who may need additional support to complete treatment via an adherence platform.

As the Global DAT Task Force we are fully funded to provide technical assistance to countries in their DAT planning, roll-out and scale up alongside BPaL(M) implementation.

Technologies

Medication Sleeves / Labels (99DOTS)

The user receives their medication in customized packaging such as special sleeves or labels.

Each day, the user makes a toll-free call or texts a code to log their daily dose.

Smart Pill Box

The user receives a specially designed box to store and organize their medication.

Each day, when the user opens the box to take medication, an embedded device sends a signal to automatically log their daily dose.

Video Supported Treatment

The user records a video using a secured app on their mobile phone during medication intake. After completion, the video is sent to the health care provider for review.
